I’ve been thinking a lot about this chart since reading New York Magazine’s cover story on the band Grizzly Bear a few weeks back. The band is hugely successful for an indie band, yet each member is only earning about $80,000/year from the work that they do. This was surprising to me, because though I understand the reality of today’s music business, I still assumed that they were somehow doing better than that with the level of success they have enjoyed in recent years.
It makes a small dent, but I’ll continue to buy MP3s for records I believe in. If you don’t want to do that, at least listen to the same albums hundreds of times on Spotify so the $0.005/stream adds up…just put it on when you are sleeping.
