This week’s Radiolab Short about lucid dreaming was straight out of Inception and scared the crap out of me during my commute this morning. In short, the guy was able to take control of a nightmare he had for 20 years and beat it. I want everyone I know to listen to it so we can talk about it.
I also just ordered the guy’s book from the library, and am very excited to check it out.

CR exclusive report: I dream of Tchaikovsky

  • Me, talking in my sleep: I see [mumble mumble mumble]. Do you want to go over there to see him?
  • CR: See who?
  • Me: Tchaikovsky! He's right there.
Anybody who tells you to have a fall back plan are people who had a fallback plan, didn’t follow their dreams, and don’t want you to either…Anybody who’s made it will tell you, you can make it. Anyone who hasn’t made it will tell you, you can’t.

John Mayer, in a discussion at the Berklee College of Music about resisting social media to focus on artistry and myths about being a musician (Read it…it’s all good stuff: Berklee blog).

Thanks for sharing, Greg. I’m glad that I always had support from my family to pursue music school followed by music jobs, and am glad that I’ve “made it” as far as I’m concerned, doing exactly what I want in NYC at this point in my career. I was just reading Betty Ford’s Wikipedia page, and was saddened to see that her mother wasn’t as supportive of her pursuits in the arts—she danced with Martha Graham in NYC before being forced to move home to Grand Rapids in 1936. She ended up a First Lady, so things worked out in a different way, but I wonder how her life may have been if she had stayed in New York.

Gregory J MR MR:

A great read, something that I have been thinking about a lot as I write and record this next round of songs.

We just watched Inception

I’m so tired, but scared to go to sleep! I don’t want to get trapped building sand castles with CR for 90 years.

In My Dreams
I’m often disappointed to wake up and realize that a photo that was just taken was only in a dream, so from now on, I’m going to make these great photos a reality.
Last night I dreamed that I saw Enrique Iglesias hanging out, and CR took a photo of me and him with his iPhone. I sleep in a nightguard for my teeth and a sleep mask for my eyes, and both of these things get in the way during dreams. I remember being disappointed that I’d be wearing the nightguard in the photo with Enrique, since no matter how many times I took them out in the dream, they were still there.

Speaking of which, recurring dreams can be as rare as shooting stars over Midtown, so it’s a bit disappointing to know that the one I have is so common. I dream that I open my closet and find an uninhabited, rent-free apartment connected to my own. Apparently a lot of people have this dream, although for some, they open the refrigerator or the medicine cabinet instead — I guess it’s a vice-dependent scenario.

Interesting. I’ve had this same dream a couple of times (only since I’ve lived in New York) with amazing secret rooms above or through closets. Have any of you?
