VERY excited for this show tonight.

Mr. Jarrett did not disappoint tonight, and played no less than 4 encores. It was a packed house, and he was very talkative and in good spirits. He has such control over the piano.
My 18 year old self would be pretty impressed and surprised to learn that I could hear Keith Jarrett live at Carnegie Hall (for free!) in 2012.

  • Me: Can you guess the sax player we hear with Billie Holiday right now? The clues are tenor sax, played with Count Basie, rhymes with "Pester Pung."
  • CR: Lester Mung?
  • Me: No. But Lester is right.
  • CR: I've never heard of this name. Lester Sung? Hung? Lung? Mung?? Tongue?
  • Me: No.
  • CR: .............Young?!
  • Me: Yes!
These battles between “high” and “low” art, between tonality and atonality, between the heart and the mind, between uptown and downtown seem to be over. This is cause for celebration! It suggests a more pluralistic, all-embracing future for classical music.
